General Information :

Habit – A gigantic tree. Bark – Smooth, peeling off in long strips which often remain hanging on the stem or branches. Leaves – 20 to 25 cm long, falcate, curved, rather thick and glaucous. Flowers – Large, axillary, 1 to 3 together, nearly sessile. Fruits – 1.8 to 2.5 cm diameter, warty, angular and valves are exsered.

Benefits :

Used for anuvasanabasti in agnimandya, anaha and in thread worms infestation being deepana, pachana, anulomana and krimighna. In atisara, pravahika and grahani since the gum is grahi. In svarabheda, jeernakasa and lung diseases being shleshmapootihara and jantughna. In shirashoola, angamarda and Vatavyadhi being stimulant to nerves and vedanashamak. In bastishotha and jeernapooyameha being mootrala and jantughna as phanta or choorna in vishamajvara and is used as kushthaghna also.


Application of oil prepared from Tailaparni (Eucalyptus globulus) is very useful as it subsidesArti (Pain).

It is also used in this way for colds and influenza or externally as a chest rub. If taken internally as in a lozenge or as cough mixture it is in very diluted state and in smaller dosages.

Eucalyptus globulus is also used as a rubefacient, a topical treatment that causes redness of the skin because the capillaries dilate and blood flow increases to the skin. It creates a warming, comforting sensation and in some cases a slight pain relief.

The eucalyptus oil is added with gels, ointments and commercially manufactured as pain balms or pain reliving oil.

The steam of the oil is inhaled to get relief from nasal congestion during cold, diseases of the lungs, cough.

Enema is given from the oil of eucalyptus to treat patients suffering from intestinal worms.

Cold infusion prepared from the leaves of eucalyptus is given in a dose of 30-40 ml,in divided dose, to treat fever.

The exudate of the Tailparni is mixed with water is used in the treatment of dysentry and irritable bowel syndrome.

The smoke coming after the burning of Nilgiri leaves is exposed to wounds having pus formation. It gives releive from pus and pain.

To treat the fever,cold infusion of Nilgiri leaves is advisiable.Dose-30-40ml

Massage of Nilgiri oil over the chest regularly is advisible in Asthma.

Nilgiri tel is helps to improve mental activity and alterness.

Massage of Nilgiri tail on the feet and chest atleast once in a day helps in draining the mucus from lungs.

To maintain the healthy hair,massage of Nilgiri tail(5ml)with Olive oil(50ml) on to scalp is advisible .

Steam inhalation of Nilgiri tail  helps to relives symptoms of cold.

To get relief from itchy scalp ,massage of Nilgiri oil with neem oil is advisiable.It is also used to treat lice

Sprey preapred with Nilgiri tail helps to keep bugs away from your body parts.

To treat cold sore,mixcture is prepared with 1 drop of Nilgiri tail,1 drop of Peppermint oil and 2-3 drops of coconut oil.This solution is applied over the affected area.

Cotton dipped in to Nilgiri oil is placed at the region of toothache and gingivitis.

For bad mouth odor,gargling of Niligiri oil (1-2 drop) with water is advisiable .

Advise to take 1-2 drop of Nilgiri oil with Batasha to boost the immunity.

Or Place Drop of Nilgiri oil and Kapoor over Handerchief  Inhalation of this protect body from infectious diseases.

Dosage :

Patra Choorna – 0.5 to 1 gm.

Phanta – 20 to 50 ml.

Niryasa – 0.5 to 1 gm.

A study done to investigate the antifungal activity of macrocarpalCagainstTrocjp[jutpm ,emtagrophytes, which can cause tinea pedis. Fresh leaves of E. globulus were extracted with 95% ethanol, and the resulting ethanolic extracts were dried before being partitioned with N-hexane. The n-hexane layer was then subjected to chromatographic purification to give macrocarpal C was determined  using the standard M38-A2 method described by the Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI).

Side Effects-

Long term uses of Nilgiri leads to nausea and stomach irritation.
