General Information :

Habit- annual herb. Stem- 20 to 100 cm. high, fistular, glabrous or hispid often purple coloured. Leaves- lower leaves are seen as hairy petioles of 3 to 5 cm long, lyrate-Pinnatfid, terminal lobes are suborbicular or shortly ovate, margin is repand or crenate, lateral lobes are alternate, oblong, ovate, denatate or subentire, oblong,ovate, dentate or subentire, Upper, ovate, dentate or subentire. Upper leaves are having shorter petiole, 2-1 jugate, terminal lobe oblong- ovate, margin is coarsely dentate. Inflorescence- raceme with 8 to 30 flowers.

Flowers- scented, white or lilac with yellow or purple veins.

Fruits- Pods, erect, cylindrical, 3 to 9 cm long, with light brown coloured seeds.

Benefits :

mulaka seed is useful in productive cough,digestive disodersand bloating abdomen.It is mild purgative in nature hence used in constipation.

Seed paste of Mulaka is used o treat amenorrhoea.Dose-1-3grams

In Charaka Samhita (sutra-14) mulaka herb is used for Nadi swedanam.

To treat the bloating abdomen and gaseous abdomen distension,boiled barley is used with radish juice and 1tsf of ghee.(Ref-Charak Chikitsta-5)

Kaphaja Grahani-

Dry radish soup is mixed with spices like pepper and ginger .This preparation is used in the treatment of IBS associated with low digestion strength,heaviness,excess salivation,mucous discharge.(Charak chikitsa-15)

Arsa (Piles)

Dried Mulaka (Raphanussativus) is crushed and put it in a cloth and fomentation given on arsas (Piles).

Kustha(Skin disorder)

In case of Kustha (Skin disease) application of paste prepared from Mulaka (Raphanussativus) and avalaguja (Psoraleacorylifolia) and cow’s urine is much beneficial.

Radish for cancer treatment

Radishes contain a compound called isothiocynates which fights against cancer like colon cancer. Isothiocynates, a cancer fighting agent, helps to control oral cancer, colon cancer, intestinal cancer, kidney cancer and stomach cancer.  A study was conducted by Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University showed that radishes genetically alter the path of cancer cells.

Radishes contain vitamin C

Radishes contain plenty of vitamin C and a half cup of radish gives you about 14% of your daily recommended vitamin C. If you eat radish regularly, it means you may keep away from many diseases. The vitamin C content helps to build tissue, blood vessels, bones and teeth. This vitamin also develops your immune system.   Radish also has other vitamins and minerals such as folate, vitamin B, vitamin K, potassium, magnesium, calcium, iron, zinc, copper, sodium, and phosphorous. Vitamin C saves you from harmful free radicals.

Radish  good for skin diseases

Radish is full of vitamin C, Zinc, B-complex and phosphorous. These minerals and vitamins are very useful in the treatment of skin disorders such as rashes and dry skin.  Radishes are used as face pack and help to provide refreshing look.

Radish cures piles

Radish is known for fiber and roughage along with plenty of water.  Since, it contains plenty of roughage; it is very effective in the treatment of PilesConstipation. If you have digestion problems, it is better to opt to radish juice. Radishes stimulate the production of bile thereby helps in digestion.

Radish for jaundice treatment

Radish is the excellent detoxifier, removes bilirubin from the blood and very useful for jaundice patients. Black radish and radish leaves are also very useful in curing of jaundice.  It helps to purify blood and increases the oxygen carrying capacity of blood.  Radish is the panacea for Jaundice patient. It not only removes bilirubin but also stops its production.

Grind fresh leaves of Mulaka,boil this paste with water.Strain this solution.This decoction should be consumed in a dose of 50ml,thrice a day to treat jaundice.

Mulaka juice (70 ml) should be taken with powdered sugar(40gm) to treat Jaundice.

Abdominal Pain-

Mulaka juice (25ml) is given with saidhav lavan and black pepper to treat the abdominal pain.

Ear Disoders-

Mix Mulaka juice with Til tail and cook this until oil is left add this prepared oil in to the both ears in ear pain.(2 drops)

Mix Mulaka extract(3gm) with honey (20gm).Dip a piece of cotton in this solution and place this cotton in ear.It controls the leakage of ear.


Advice to eat fresh soft Mulak with sugar to cotrol the acidity.

Mulaka leave juice (10-20ml)should be taken wwith sugar after meal.It helps to cures the many digestive disoders.


Mulaka seeds(1-2gm) with sesame seeds(5gm) should be taken 3 times a day in case of swelling.

Eye problems-Juice is prepared from white mulaka.Rinse the eyes with this juice and water.It helps to cures haziness of eyes and other eye disoders.

Paste of Mulaka seed with warm water helps in cleasing of throat.

Radish for asthma cure

Radish is considered as one of the best food for asthmatic patients. It helps to relieve respiratory congestion and also the sinus problems.

Radish for kidney disease

Radish is considered as one of the best foods for kidney cleansing.  Radish is a natural diuretic.  It helps to prevent urinary tract infection and burning sensation of urinary problems.

Mulaka juice is used in a dose of 20-40ml thrice a day to normalise the urine formation.

In case of Kidney pain-take 10gm of Kalmishora grind it in 120gm of mulaka swarasa,dry this preparation .Take 1-2 tablets twice a day.


Cut the Mulaka in to 4 pieces,add 6gm of roasted alum on it.Keep this as it is for overnight.Eat this mulaka in nex morning.

Radish lowers blood pressure

Radish contains higher amount of Potassium and also some levels of sodium. Sodium is known for increasing blood pressure while it is counteracted  by potassium.  If somebody is suffering from blood pressure or high blood pressure, he should take radish regularly to overcome BP.

Radish for weight loss

Radish has sufficient amount of roughage and fiber. It is low in calorie and glycemic level.  It has no fat and cholesterol. Research Corner :

A bioassay-guided fractionation and chemical investigation of the MeOH extract of Raphanussativus seeds resulted in the isolation and identification of eight phenylpropanoidsucrosides (1-8) incuding two new compounds, named raphasativuside A and B (1-2) from the most active CHCI3 S soluble fraction. The structures of these new compounds were elucidated through spectral analysis, including extensive 2DNMR data, and chemical raction experiments. The anti-inflammatory effects of 1-8 in lipopolysaccharide (LPS) stimulated murine microglia BV2 cells is evaluated. Compounds 2 and 5 exhibited significant inhibitory effect on nitric oxide production in LPS- activated BV-2 cells with IC50 values of 21.63 and 26.96 uM. Respectively. All isolates were also evaluated for their antiproliferative activities against four human tumor cell lines (A549,Sk-OV-3 SK-MEL-2, and HCT-15). Compounds 1-7 showed consistent cytotoxicity against A549,SK-OV-3,SK-MEL-2 and HCT-15 cell lines with IC 50 values f 6.71-27.92 uM.
