General Information :

Leaves – cordate, reniform-or-bicular, 11 cm in diameter, more or less deeply five lobed, hispid beneath petiole is 7.5 to 10 cm in length with out glands. Flowers- Monecious, large, yellow coloured, solitary without bracts. Male flowers are with 5 petals and 3 stamens. Female flowers with oblong ovary and densely hairy.Fruits – Very large, 30-45 cm long, broadly cylindric, fleshy, pubescent and indehiscent. Seeds – Many, oblong, compressed and margined.

External application-

Kushmanda is sheeta virya in nature hence leaf juice is rubbed on bruise as it gives coolening effect.

Dandruff and hair fall-

oil prepared with crushed kushmanda seeds and coconut oil is used to apply on scalp in case of dandruff and hair fall.



According to Charakacharya and Sushrutacharya- cooked kushmanda is laxative and diuretic in nature.

kushmanada swarsa used in mental disoders and nervous disoders.

Being anulomana and trishnanigrahana due to its madhura rasa and snigdhaguna,

it should be used in vibandha, adhama and Pittajatrishna.

Krimi – beejakalka should be given to kill tape worms and should be followed by a purgative.Dose-20-30gm.

Arsha – seed oil acts as a laxative and a styptic; hence it should be used in arsha.Dose-10-20gm

Kushmandarasayana is used in the treatment of bleeding disorders, emaciation, chronic respiratory conditions requiring nutrition and strength, vomitting.
It is usually administered after a person has recovered from fever, to improve strength.
It is also used along with or after anti tuberculosis treatment to improve general health, strength and weight.

It helps to minimize the side effects of anti tuberculosis medications by supporting liver and improving digestion and providing much needed respiratory strength.

kusmnda (Benincasahispida)root powder taken with warm water relives all kinds of Swas (Asthma) and kasa (Cough).

kushmanda fruit kwath is used in the treatment of internal haemorrhage and disoders of respiratory tract.

Apasmara (Epilepsy) :

Ghee processed with juice of kusmanda (Benincasahispida) for eighteen times is taken with the paste of yastmadhu (Glycyrrhizaglabra) alleviates Apasmara (Epilpsy) and improves intelligence, speech and voice.

Mutrakrichra (Dysuria) :

Kusmanda (Benincasahispida) juice consumed with Yvaksara (Salt  of Tartar) and Hingu (Ferula narthax) will relieve dysuria and also reduces pain in pelvis and genitals.

Dosage :

Pulp juice : 10 to 20 ml.

Chemical Composition :

It contains cucurbitine, a bitter resin, protein, myosin, vitaline, sugar and salts. Seeds contain a fixed oil which is wormicidal.

Research Corner :

It alcoholic  extract lowered  fasting blood sugar level in a dose of 61.2 mg. to 41.6 mg. in 100 ml. after 5 hours of administration to rabits. The effect persists for 24 hours.

The same in 10 and 30 mg. per kg. I.V. dose caused fall in mean arterial B.P. [CCRMH].

In the present study, the objective was to search out the effective solvent extract of fruit of Benincasahispida. T. for the management of hypochlorhydria in model male albino rats. From the results, it can be concluded that the ABH has most effective anti-hypochlorhydric and antioxidative efficacy than other solvent extracts of said plant fruit

Side effects-

It is kaphavardhaka hence it is not given in cold ,asthmaor bronchitis.

It is given during indigestion.

It is not given in obese patient also as it cause weight gain

overdose of kushmanda swarasa cause loose motion.
