  • General Information :

Capparis sepiaria is a scrambling, prickly, evergreen shrub or climbing plant growing around 3 metres tall. The plant is a local source of food, medicines and fuel.

Habit – much branched woody climber. Young shoots are more or less pubescent., Leaves- 2 to 4 cm long and 1 to 2 cm wide oblong elliptic or obovate, petioles are 2.5 to 4 mm long. Pubscent , stipular spines are hooked. Flower- white, 6 to 9 mm in diameter, seen in dense short pedncled or sessile umbels, pedicels are 1 to 2 cm long. Fruit- 6 to 9 mm in diameter globose becomes black on ripening.

  • External-

Bark paste of Himsra is applied over the boils ,two times a day.

External application of paste of Himsra bark and Indian mulberry with mustard oil over the scalp is advisiable in Baldness.

 

Internal

It is used in  agnimandya , pachanavikriti and yakridvikara being ruchikara and deepana; in hriddaurbalya , shotha and shleepada being rakta shuddhikara and shothahara; also in jvara due to its all gunas.

The spicy buds contain healthy levels of vitamins such as vitamin-A, vitamin-K, niacin, and riboflavin. Niacin helps lower LDL cholesterol.

Furthermore, minerals like calcium, iron, and copper are present in sufficient amounts in them. High sodium level, however, is mainly due to the addition of sea salt (sodium chloride) in the brine.

Antioxidant Powers:

It is rich in flavonoid compounds including rutin and quercetin which are potent sources of antioxidants. Antioxidants are known to prevent free radical, which can cause cancer and skin related diseases.

Mineral Mine:

It  contain minerals like iron, calcium, copper and high levels of sodium which provide enrgy to the body. .

Bark decoction of Himsra with lukewarm water should be given to releive the constipation.

Phant of Himsra leaves is used to treat the fever and Indigestion.

To treat Kidney stone-take equal quantity of Caper roots,caper thorns,milk thistle,Aerva lanata,Pavonia.Grind this all together and boil in 4 parts of water until it remains 1/4th .Take this decoction in a dose of 3 tsf for two times.

Vataja yonivyapath ( Vaginal diseases of Vata dosa)

In case of vataja yonivyapath the paste of himsra (Capparis sepiaria ) is kept in Vagina after anointing.

Vataja sotha ( Swelling due to vata dosa )

Application of paste preapare from Himsra ( Capparis sepiaria ) and Rasna ( Pluchea lanceolata ) will be beneficial in vataja sotha (oedema due to vata).

  • Research corner :

Capparis sepiaria leaves were extracted with ethanol and concentrated to dryness. The L.D (50) value was determined as 894.43 mg/kg body weight by acute toxicity study. The ethanol extract was investigated for possible hypoglycemic effect produced by single oral administration at various levels 100, 200 and 300 mg/kg in the streptozotocin  induced diabetic rats and compared against normal saline control and the standard glibenclamide. A maximum fall of plasma glucose level 9.40% ,13.57% , 15.27% and 18.80% were observed after 12 hours of treatment when administered with ethanol-extract of Capparias sepiaria at 100, 200 and 300 mg/kg and glibenclamide 10 mg/kg dose, respectively . the findings from the study suggest that the leaves of Capparis sepiaria may be used to control diabetes Mellitus.

Side Effects-

It should be used after physician opion only in pregnancy and lactating period.

It can be used in children in small doses.
