  • General Information :

Paederia foetida is an important Ayurvedic medicinal herb. Its Sanskrit name is Gandha Prasirini. The word meaning in sanskrit is – it spreads bad smell. It is a unique feature of this herb. Habit- Glabrous creeper grows with support, leaves- Opposite, ovate or lanceolate, acute or cuspidate tip. Base is rounded 4 to 5 pairs of thin nerves, leaves are 5 to 7 cm long 2.5 to 4 cm wide. Petioles are 1 to 4 cm long. Stipules are ovate lanceolate and bifid., Inflorescence- panicle upto 15 cm long., flowers- vioet coloured, with short pedicelled. Corolla is funnel shaped.   • Benefits :

Anna and Pureshavaha :

Being malanulomana due to its  guru and sara gunas, it should be used as Vtanulomana and shoolaghna in anaha, and  vatagulma. It is vatashamana and shoolaghna being guru, ushna and sara. Its leaf paste or its cooked vegetable should be given for this purpose internally.

Amavata ( Rhumatoid Arthritis )

Decoction prepared from Gandha prasarini (  Paederia foetida ) is taken with jiggery, Lasuna ( Allium sativum ) and pancausana ( Pippali, Pippalimula, Cavya, Citraka and Sunthi ) in case of Amavata ( Rhumatoid Arthritis).

Fruits are used to relive toothache.

Gandhaprasarani has aphrdisiac propertyand improves the semen quality.

It provide strength to the body and ehances the immunity.

Leaves of Gandhaprasarani is given in a person having infertility problems.

A decoction of extract of gandhaprasarani is given in a chronic abdominal pain,abscesses.Dose-2tsf,twice a day

It is used to stimulate the central nervous system

The leaves of Gandhaprasarani  posses anti-inflammatory properties hence it is given in inflammation.

The entire plant of Gandhaprasarani is given in chronic dysentry and diarrhea.

Leaves of Gandhaprasarani are boiled and mashed.Polutice is prepared from this leaves.Application of this polutice over the abdomen gives relief from urinary retension.

Application of Gandhaprasarani powder on abdomen gives relief from flatulence.Decoction of Gandhaprasarani is applied n the forehead with water.It brings the temperature down in fever.

  • Chemical Composition:

Leaves contain proteins and a volatile and foetid substance called methyl mercaptol which is destroyed on boiling.

  • Research Corner :

An investigation is done to evaluate the antidiabetic, antihyperlipidemic and antioxidant activity of the methanolic extract of the Pederia foetida linn. Leaf extract in the streptozotocin induced diabetic rats. The results indicated that the leaf extract of paediria foetida linn. Showed remarkable antihyperglaycemic activity due to its possible systematic effect involving in the Pancreatic and extrapancreatic mechanism. The antihyperlipidemic activity was exerted possible by lowering the higher level of lipid profile and decreasing the intercalated disc space in the heart. The antioxidant activate of extract was due to inhibition of lipid peroxidation.
