General Information:

The Deodar tree grows in abundance in the Himalayas. Its Sanskrit name, Devadaru, means ‘Wood of the Gods’. The inner wood yields an essential oil which has many uses. The oil has anti-inflammatory properties and is beneficial in alleviating joint pain. According to Indian Medicinal Plants—An Illustrated Dictionary by C.P. Khare, the aqueous extract of the bark supports normal blood sugar levels in the body.

eodar/Devdar is know as Himalayan Cedar tree. It is a very tall evergreen coniferous tree of Himalaya. It bears cone with brown seeds. It is a very important medicinal and timber tree. Its wood is strong and durable and used for house building, beams, floorboards, door, window frames, furniture, general carpentry and building railway sleepers, carriage and railway wagon work. The wood of tree contains aromatic essential oil.

There are two varietites

DevadaruCedrusdeodara

SaralaDevadaru – PinusLongifoliaRoxb.

Unctuous or telyadeodara the present one; its wood is thick and oily, it is used as dhopa.

Kashthadaru – Polialthialongifolia is named as kasthadaru which is not true deodara.

Benefits :

External-

External application of Deodar paste helps to relieve pain,swelling,inflammation,cleansing infected wounds and in skin disorders associated with pain and itching.

Oil prepared from Deodar is used in headache,arthritic pain and infested wounds.

External application  of Deodar paste is advisiable in breast pain and mastitis.

Deodar is mainly used  in Upanaha sweda.The poultice of deodara is used to relieve stiffness as in rheumatic arthritis and cervical spondolysis.(Ref-Ashtanga Hruday)

Deodara churna is used for Udvartana in Charaka Samhita.It is useful in treating obesity,pruritus,urticaria etc

Cream prepared from Deodara is used during winter season to relieve pain and body stiffness.

Oilis useful externally and orally for treating syphilis

Hiccough and breathlessness

Decoction of Deodar wood should be given in Hiccough.It clears the airways and soothe the diaphragm

Wounds, leprosy, and syphilis

Deodar is an antiseptic and antiphlogistic,

Hot paste of deodar with water should be applied over affected area. It is also a well-known blood purifier and deodar oil can be taken internally in the above cases.

Filariasis

Take mustard oil and deodar make a paste of it and apply on the affected part of fight obstruction to the vessels and reduce swelling. Deodar is especially recommended in glandular diseases.

 

  • The bark of cedarwood proves to be a good remedy in remittent and intermittent fevers, diarrhea and dysentery. The powder is used in the treatment of ulcers.
  • The inner wood of the plant is aromatic and is thus, used to make incense. The inner wood is also distilled to make essential oils.
  • The essential oil obtained from this plant is used as insect repellant on the feet of horses, cattle and camels, as insects avoid venturing close to it.
  • Cedarwood possesses anti-fugal properties and has shown limited potential in controlling fungal deterioration of species, during storage.
  • The outer bark and stem of the tree are used for making astringent.
  • The biomedical actions of the plant are believed to be carminative and antispasmodic. It creates sweating and urination.
  • The Ayurvedic functions of the plant promote digestive function, remove toxins from the bowel, alleviate coughing, and cure skin disorders, such as eczema and psoriasis.Readmore .

  • The oil is used to treat skin disorders such as eczema and psoriasis.

Choorna – 1 to 3 gm.

Oil – 20 to 40 drops.

Chemical Composition:

The wood yields a redish smoky oil containing sexquiterpine, cholestrine, liguin, tannins, B sistesterol , etc.

Side Effects-

There are no known side effects with this.It can be safely used during lactation period and in children.
