Sanskrit Name-

Anala,Dahana,Pithi,Vahnisajnaka,Agni,Agnika,Jyothi,Nirdahana,Vahni,Sikhi,Vyala,Hutasana-all these synonyms suggest towards fire.It helps to improve digestion strength.

At the time of drug collectioin,it causes burning in palms hence it is called as dahana.

Agnika-‘agnitulyha ushna sparshe veeryam cha.’-having fire quality

General Information:

Name  ofPlumbago is derived from word plumb that means lead and agree to convey and  commonly Plumbagozeylanica is known as Ceylon leadwort, doctor and wild leadwort. One of very effective digestive and carminative herb is chitraka. In ayurvedic medicinal system chitrak is considered as rasayan.

Usually the following varieties are found-

P.Zeylanica-White

P.rosea L-Red and

P.Capensis Thunk-Blue

But only Plumbago zeylanica or white variety of Chitrak is used for therapeutic purposes.

Benefits :

External-Paste of chitrak herb is applied externally to reduce skin inflammation,filariasis and various other disoders associated with skin.

Root paste of chitrak is applied externally on carbuncles,wounds and syphilitic ulcers.

Internal-

It is triptighna, lekhagna, bhedaniya and arshoghna by its deepana, pachana, ushna and rooksha gunas.

It removes kledakakapha accumulated in amashaya and stimulates secretion of pachakapitta  by its ushna, teekshna and rookshagunas whereby staimitya.

Piles

Pulverised root powder of chitrak is taken with buttermilk in the treatment of piles.

Dose 1-2gm , thrice a day.

Atisaar, diarrhoea

Chitrak root powder is given in  diarrhoea or loose motion .

dose of 1-2 grams thrice a day

Skin diseases, kustha

Chitrak root powder with cow’s urine given in the treatment of skin diseases.

Dose-1-2gm ,three times a day

It is also used for anti-aging purpose.Chitrak mool churna is administered along with milk or ghee and honey or only with ghee for 1 month.

Chitrakmool churna is taken with cow’s urine for the treatment of leukoderma.

Obesity

Chitrak root powder with honey is given in obesity.

dose of 1-2 grams

Filarial swelling, opens abscesses, skin diseases and ulcers

The root paste is applied externally on affected body parts.

Arthritis

Oil prepared with chitrak roots ,sarpgandha in  mustard oil should apply in arthritis.

Dermatitis

Chitrak root paste with water should be applied on affected area.

Scabies

Bark and leaves paste of Chitrak with turmeric should be applied over affected area of scabies.

Churna is also used in the treatment of hepatomegaly and splenomegaly.

it is also used in the treatment of amenorrhoea.

Red variety of chitrak causes the weight gain because it improves the appetite.

The Chitrak herb is used to expel out thick nasal mucus which is main cause of recurrent common cold and cough.It helps to reduce the inflammation hence it is also used in chronic sinusitis and bronchitis.

Leaves of Chitrak is used in the treatment of laryngitis and rheumatism.

Anti ageing And rejuvenation-

The quality of anti-ageing and rejuvenation of chitrak was explained by Ashtanga Hrudaykar.

When chitrakmool powder is taken with ghee or sesame oil for 1 year,it makes the person’s life of 100 years.

Chitrakamoola churna with sesame oil is a remedy for all vata disorders.

Chitrakamoola with cow’s urine is used in the treatment of leucoderma(Ashtanga Hrudaya Uttartantra Rasayana Chapter)

Extract of Chitrak is used in lowering the cholesterol level.It is also used to inhibits the growth of cancer causing cells of prostate.

 

Shodhana of Red variety of Chitrak-

Chitraka roots are cut in to small pieces.They are kept immersed in 3-4% of lime water for 3 hours.Then it is taken out and again immersed in fresh lime water for another 3 hours.This process is repeated for three times

Formulation (Kalp):

Chitrakadigutika, Chitrakhareetakee, Chitrakghrita, Chitrakadichoorna, Chitrakavaleha, Chitrakquatha, Chitraksiddhataila.

Kalyanagulam

Dosage :

Choorna – 0.5 to 1.5 gm.

Chemical Composition:

The root contains yellow crystals called plumbagin, chlorplumbagin, biplumbagin, eliptinone, etc. plumbaginisantiseptic, antifungal and anticarcinogenic.

Modern Research:

Oral plumbagin acetate showed anti-implantation effect in 80 to 83 p.c. cases.

Root of plumbagorosea has a radiosensitizing effect on oral carcinoma when given along with radiation. This is to due to increased severity of mucosal reaction.

Side effects-

It is not safe durning the pregnancy

It may causes the heavy bleeding during menstruation.

In excess quantity it causes burning sensation,gastritis and may cause neuropathy.
