General Information :

Leaves – Oblong or elliptic with acute or rounded apex, coriaceous, glabrous, dark green above. Inflorescence – Axillary cymes. Flower – white, tinged with pink and scented. Fruit – Large berries, oblong or globose, fleshy, rind is thick, irregular or warted, on ripening becomes yellow. Seeds smooth and few in number.

Benefits :

It is  ruchikara, trishnanigrahana, deepana, anulomana and yakritottejana in nature hence it should be used in aruchi, chhardi, trishna, agnimandya, yakrit vikaras, shola, gulma and arsha. Its stamens being grahi should be used in pravahika and arsha.

Sula (Colic)

Bijapuraka (Citrus medica)juice with honey and alkali is very useful in sula (Colic).

Mukha Vairasya in Jwara (Tastelessness due to fever)

Matulunga (Citrus medica)juice mixed with honey and rocksalt is very useful in tastelessness due to fever.

Fatigue

Extract Juice from half Citron fruit. Add a cup of water in it. Drink whenever feel tired.

Scurvy

Drink 50 ml Citron fruit juice twice a day.

Gum Diseases :

Chew 2-3 leaves of Citron plant daily.

The filaments of Matulunga are used in colic pain,anorexia,costipation,impairment of digestion,alcoholisms,hiccough,dyspnoea,cough,vomiting,disoders relating o faces and such other diseases as arise from the vitiated vata as well as kapha.(ref-Charaka Sutra-27)

The twak of Matulunga is pungent in taste and oily in composition .It controls the growth of intestinal parasites.It pacifies the kapha and vata dosha

The mesocarp of Matulunga is oily in nature .It nourishes the tissues,increases virility and pacifies the vata and pitta dosha.

The flowers of Matulunga is used in the treatment of gulma.

The leaves and fruits of Matulunga is used for the preparation of Jambira Pinda sweda,Naranga kizhi hich is used for swedan treatment.

Seed paste of Matulunga is used in case of scorpion bite.

Juice of Matulunga is used for stimulation of liver and proper secreation of bile juice

To treat the diabetes seed decoction of Matulunga is advisiable.Dose-5ml BD

To get relief from bad odor it is adviced to chew small piece of Matulunga peel.

Decoction of Matulunga root and stem is used to treat the inflammation.Dose-30ml BD

Or it is advised to apply the paste of Matulunga root o stem over the inflammed area.

Drink the Matulunga sharabat in case of Fatigue or tiredness.

 

Method of Intake

In rainy seasons-Matulunga should be taken with Saidhav lavana

In Sharad season-ith Sita or Mishri

In Hemanta,Shishir and Magha-with salt,ginger,hinga,black peppers.

In Grishma-with Jaggery

Dosage:

Fruit Juice – 10 to 20 ml.

 

Chemical Composition :

Citric acid, Sulphuric acid, glucose, Abscisic Acid, Abscisin II, Limonin, Limonene, Limocitrol, Rutin etc. Peel contains citrol, citrine.

Research Corner :

Study is conducted to determine the chemical composition and the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and hypoglycemic potential of Citrus medica flowers, leaves and fruits at two maturity stages. Flowers  and leaves were characterized by the highest total phenols and flavonoids contents.

 

Side Effects-

Unripe fruits are unhealthy for consumption

Very sour fruits are contra indicated in High pitta conditions such as bleeding disoders,nasal bleeding,burning sensation,gastritis

It should not be consumed along with milk
