General Information Of Ashvagola:
A stainless or nearly stainless softly hairy or woolly annual. Leaves- 7.5-20 cm long, scarcely reaching 0.6 cm broad, narrowly linear or filiform , finely acuminate, entire or distantly toothed, attenuated at the base, usually 3- nerved. Scapes longer or shorter than the leaves, glabrous or pubescent. Inflorescence – spike, flowers- 1-4 cm long, bracts 4 mm long, glabrous calyx, sepals are elliptic, obtuse, corolla lobes rounded , 3 mm long fruit- Capsule , 8 mm long , ellipsoid, obtuse, the upper half coming off as a blunt conical lid, membranous , glabrous, seed- 3 mm long, ovoid- oblong, boat shaped, smooth, yellowish brown in colour.

दाहतृष्णाहरं बल्यं ज्वरघ्ण चाथ शस्यते ।
प्रवाहीकातीसारामदातृष्णाज्वारादिशु ।।
वातपित्तमाये कासे दौर्बलये मूत्रकृचछ्रजे ।

Benefits Of Ashvagola:
Its bark should be used in chhardi, atisara and pravahika being stambhana.
Ripe fruit being snehana, mridu rechana and anulomana, in udarashoola and vibandha; It is raktashodhaka and raktapittashamak hence used in vatarakta and raktapitta. Bark and fruit are used with honey in raktapitta.
The fruit and the root are garbhasthapana and vajeekarana; shungasiddha ksheera should be given with honey and sugar for the purpose.
Bark and the fruit should be used in prameha.

Vibandha (Constipation ):
In vibandha – powdered isabgol 1 tsf taken with water twice a day.
Isabgol seeds are soaked in adequate water, then I teaspoon sugar is added and administered twice a day will be beneficial in vibandha (constipation).
The seed husk of Ashwagol is soaked in water for a couple of hours and later it is consumed to treat distention of abdomen, constipation and flatulence.
Cold infusion of the seeds of Isabgol means phant kalpana of Isabgol is consumed in a dose of 30-40 ml to treat retention of urine.

Pravahika (Slimy dysentery)
isabgol seeds 5gm are mixed with sugarcandy administered 2 to 4 times a day. It is an efficacious remedy for pravahika (slimy dysentery).

Sotha (Swelling):
Upanaha (Poultice) of isabgol is employed in swellings of rheumatism and gout.

Dosage Of Ashvagola :
Bija (Seed) – 5 to 10gm.

Research Corner Of Ashvagola :
Plant ago ovate husk could be beneficial in patients with parkinsons disease because it regulates stool transit in the intestine and because it improves levodopa pharmacokinetics is slowed. These changes could lead to a possible delay in the onset of dyskinesia and to changes in prognosis.
