  • General Information :

Habit- large spreading evergreen tree grows upto 50 ft. in height, Leaf- crowded at the ends of branches, coriaceous, simple, 12 to 25 cm long and 3 to 7 cm wide, oblong or oblong, lanceolate acute tip, shining, margins often undulate , base is narrowed, petioles are 1 to 3 cm long, Inflorescence – Panicle inflorescence , Flowers- Monoecious, 5 mm long, with disagreeable odour. Fruit- drupe, fleshy, obliquely pyriform or subovoid, 7 to 20 cm long, seed is compressed, fibrous and very hard.

  • DOSAGE

Choorna 0.5 to 1 gm.

As vamana 3 to 4 gm.

Taila – 5 to 10 drops.

Swarasa (Juice) – 10 to 20 ml.

Kwatha (Decoction )- 50 to 100 ml.

Curna (Powder)- 6 to 5 g.

  • Chemical Composition

Leaves and bark contain Mangiferin (flavonoid, natural xanthone C-glycoside), Mangiferolic acid, homonangiferin, indicenol.
Young leaves have tannins, flavonoid, steroid, cardiac glycoside, alkaloids & carbohydrate.

  • It worsen the Raktapitta i.e bleeding disoders such as nasal bleeding,heavy periods.
  • It vitiates the rakta dosha and increases the kapha dosha

Sweet Mango Uses-

It is given in Vataj vikaraslike neuralgia,paralysis,constipation

It is heavy to digest.It nourishes the body  and provide sthrength and good immunity to body.

It improves the sperm and semen quantity and quality

It improves the skin quality

If it is taken in excess quantity then it causes indigestion and constipation.

 

Mango Bark Quality-

It is grahi in nature hence it is used in diarrhoea and IBS.It balances Kapha and Pitta dosha.

Mango young leaf shoots-

It improves taste,useful in anorexia.It is grahi in nature.It is kashaya rasatmak and balances kapha and pitta dosha

Mango flower-

Balances Kapha and Pitta but vitiate Rakta dosha.It improves taste .It is given in Atisaar,Prameha and dushta shonita.

 

Vitality

Amra fruit content sucrose in good amount hence it provide lots of energy and vitality to body.Also it has good amount of water which prevents body from dehydration.. In addition, there is also in part the use of fruit amra fatherly cure and overcome the wounds caused by burns.

 

  1. Treating Diarrhea and Thrush

2 cup of water with 15gm of amra bark boiled and reduced up to half.It is used in diarrhea and trush.

  1. Treating cough

Arma rasa with rock salt used in treating cough.

  1. Treating Dysentery

The leaves and bark of this tree contains many flavanoida, saponins and tannins. The content is very useful to cure dysentery and cough cure.

  • Home Remedise

1.      Darunaka (Dandruff)

Powders prepared from seed of Amra (Mangifera indica) and siva (Terminalia chebula) is mixed with milk and paste is prepared. Application of this paste relieves Darunaka  (Dandruff).

2.      Chardi (Vomiting)

Decoction prepared from tender leaves of Amra (Mangifera indica) and jambu (Syzigium cumini ) cooled, added with honey and administered.

 

  • Reserch Corner

The study done to assess the effects of Mangifera indica stem bark extract and mangiferin on pain related acute behaviors in the formalin 5% test. Stem bark extract decreased licking/biting and flinching behaviors only   in phase II and reduced the long term formalin injury induced secondary chronic mechano-hyperalgesia. The results could represent and important contribution to explain the analgesic ethnobotanical effects recognized to Mangifera indica and other species containing Mangiferin. Garrido-Suarez BB, Garrido G, Garica ME, Delgado- Hernandez R. “ Antihyperalgesic effects of an aqueous stem bark extract of Mangifera indica L. role of Mangiferin isolated from the extract .

 Side Effects

Excess consumption of sour mango fruit causes-

Weak digestion ,vitiation of blood disoders like skin diseases,bleeding disoders

Causes recurrent fever

Causes constipation and bloating

Causes eye disoders.

To counter the side effects-

Ginger water is advised or cumin seeds with sochal salt is advised
