General Information Of Ajamoda :
Habit- an annual herb. Grows upto 1 mtr in height, Leaves – Lower leaves are broad, where as upper leaves are linear-lanceolate. Inflorescence – Umbel inflorescence. Flowers- white or greenish white and very small. Fruit- very small, Cremocarp, 2 mm long.

Benefits Of Ajamoda :
It acts as deepana and pachana dravya by to its katu- tikta rasa and is kaphaghna ,But it is vidahi due to its teekshna guna. vatanulmana action caused by its ushana and snighdha; it is krimighna being katutika, ushana and teekshana . it is also useful in agnimandya, adhamana, udarashoola, krimi and kaphaja chhardi.
External Use-
Poultice prepared by using ajamoda seeds in warm water is externally applied over the joints for getting relief from joint pain.
It is also used in gouty arthrits,rheumatoid arthritis,osteoarthritis and non specific arthritis.
Sasula Atisara (Diarrhoea with pain)
In sasula Atisara (Diarrhoea with pain ) ajmoda powder,katvanga and madhuka mixed with milk, ghee, honey and sugar .Dose-2tsf twice a day
Vataja vikara (Disorders of vata) and swarabheda (Hoarseness of Voice)
Ajmoda powder with Combination of Devadaru (Cedrus deodara), Agnika (Carum roxburghianum) and honey is very useful in vata vyadhi (Disorders of vata) and Swarabheda (Hoarseness of voice).
It removes nervous constriction.
It gives relief in menstrual cramps.
It promotes downward flow of air (anulomana).
It stimulates digestive process.

Chemical Composition Of Ajamoda :
Its fruits contain an essential oil and a crystalline alkaloid called keton. It contains cumarine, anjelisine, soralin etc.
Research Corner Of Ajamoda:
Study done to evaluate the chemical composition and antimicrobial activity of Trachyspermum roxburghianum. Study shown presence of thymol, r-terpinene and o-cymene were the major components of trachyspermum roxburghianum.
Side effects-
It is not indicated in pregnancy in large dose as it may cause uterus contractions.
It should be taken causiously in high pitta,hyperacidity as it increases pitta
It is drying in nature
The diureticaction of ajamoda works by irritating the kidneys and therfore should be used with causion in cases of renal disoders.
