Varicose Vein And Ayurveda-

  • Many of us might suffering from varicose vein.In this condition the vein becomes enlarged and tortuous(swelled).
  • Most common site of affection is lower limb.  More than 5 percent of the population suffers from this problem in our society.
  • Irregular food habits and lifestyles are the main causes for the weakening of the diagestive system, venous and nervous system.
  • It is defined as abnormally enlargement of superficial veins.     It is because of the weakness of walls of superficial veins .They loose elasticity
  • It is mostly manifests during pregnancy and after child birth.It develop as spider veins which are enlarged capillary.

 

 

Signs and Symptoms of Varicose Veins

  • Painful and tortuous veins superficially seen on the legs (often harmless)
  • Heaviness in the legs
  • Swelling in the ankle joint after standing for a long time, after walking or by evening
  • Burning sensation
  • itching sensation in the lower limbs which leads to scratching and rash
  •  Ulcer can develop
  • Rarely dermatitis can occure

Causes

  • Obesity
  • Professions/circumstances that require standing for a long time (like teaching).
  • Sedentary lifestyle
  • Chronic constipation
  • Portal hypertension
  • Old age
  • Pregnancy
  • Any abdominal tumors
  • Irregular food habits
  • Pathology
  • The venous system in the legs carries the blood in the opposite direction of gravity towards heart.
  • Due to above mention causes the nervous system become weak.Which cause the loss of elasticity of vein.  the valves of the veins become weak Hence the blood becomes stagnant in the veins instead of flowing.
  • Varicosity may happen in both superficial and deep veins, and both will be painful.
  • According to Ayurveda, varicosity is mainly a Vataja Vyadhi.But there is involvement of rakta and pitta also.
  • Vyaan vayu is responsible for all kind of movements and transportation in the body, disturbed vyaana vaata affects the valves of the veins, and hence the upward movement of the blood is hampered.
  • Vitiated Pitta is responsible for burning sensations, discoloration of the skin and ulcer/wound formation in later stages.

Preventive Treatment-

  • Do regular exercise,
  • lose weight if you obese
  • Avoid tight clothes
  • Avoid  long periods of standing
  • Avoid a sedentary lifestyle.
  • Wearing compression stockings
  • Compress the veins and prevents from streatching and hurting
  • Leg elevating position.
  • Crepe bandage.
  • Use elastic stockings.
  • Avoid ling standing posture.
  • Foods that lead to impairment of vaata and pitta in the body are to be avoided—for example, junk foods, salty foods, excess of spicy foods, dry food—as well as smoking.
