Pitta dosha is Sasneha (oily), Teekshna (sharp), Ushna (hot), Laghu(light), Vistra (strong fleshy smell), Sara (spread easily) and Drava (liquid) in qualities.

Functions of Prakruta Pitta Dosha

Pakti- Digestion or Pakti is the main Karma of Pitta. Ushna and tikshan guna of pitta is responsible for digestion process.Pitta represents Agni in human body. The food which we take as a Aahar is digested by agni present in pitta dosha.The process of digestion and metabolism is not limited to stomach and intestine ,it also extends to cellular level.

Ushma- Normal body temperature is maintained by Pitta dosha. The Uhna guna is responsible for this.The conditions in which there is increase in temperature like jwar (fever),inflammation etc,there is involvement of pitta.

Darshana – Fire produces light and light is needed for vision.Hence the function of vision is performed by pitta dosha .TejaMahaabhoota situated in Aalochaka Pitta performs this Karma of Darshana.

Kshut- Ushna guna of Pitta is responsible for normal hunger or Kshudha .Generally Pitta prakrutij person’s digestive capacity is more than other.They requires frequent meal due to good jatharagni. Increase in pitta dosha leads to the vyadhi called as Bhasmaka roga.

Trusha- Thirst in normal condition is one of the Karma of Prakrutapitta. Vitiated Pitta causes Trushna Vyadhi.

Prabha- Prakrut Pitta is responsible for Glow and complexion of skin as pitta,blood tissue and skin are interconnected. Pittaprakruti persons are more fair and luysterous.

Medha-The term medha means the ability to grasp. Agni situated in Pitta performs this action. As agni takes away the darkness or ignorance.

Dhee-Dhruti and Buddhi- Agni mahabhuta in pitta is vresponssible for Dhee-dhruti and buddhi.It means to retain,memorise and analyse knowledge .

Shourya-Tikshna guna of Agni Mahaabhoota and Pitta responsible for Shourya or adventurous nature

Tanumardava – Pitta creates softness and suppleness of body by its sasneha guna.

Types of Pitta dosha-

Pitta dosha has 5 sub-types.

Pachaka Pitta
It is located between stomach and large intestine (between amashaya and pawashaya).It is formed by all five basic Panchamahabutas.Fire is predominant while water is less in it.It is also called as Anal as it governs the digestion and transformation of food.(Paka). It stimulates digestive enzymes and separates nutrients & waste products from aahar rasa. Any vitiation in Pachaka pitta leads to anorexia, rise of body temperature, burning sensation, indigestion, hyperacidity, ulcers, nausea & vomiting, low appetite, poor digestion, bloating, constipation, etc.

Ranjaka Pitta
It is located in Amashaya-stomach-duodenum.Ranjaka is a Sanskrit word which means giving color.It converts the rasa dhatu in to raktadhatu.
Accordind to Acharya Sushrut It is located in the liver and spleen.The process of erthyogenesis (i.e production and maintainance of blood) is occurs in spleen and liver. The spleen acts as a filter and blood reservoir. Imbalance in Ranjaka pitta leads to anemia, jaundice, hepatitis, and abnormal skin pigmentation.

Sadhaka Pitta
It is suitated in Hruday-heart and brain.Mental functions like knowledge, intelligence,self –consiousness and memory is performed by sadhaka pitta.As Sadhaka Pitta is present in both the brain and heart. It stimulates the hypothalamus ultimately to maintain balance and homeostasis of the whole body. It also releases certain neurotransmitters such as dopamine and serotonin responsible for cognition and understanding. Consider Sadhaka pitta as the brilliance, able to make sense from digested incoming information. This pitta accomplishes dynamic transformation of thoughts into feelings and feelings into emotions.Imbalance in sadhaka pitta leads to lack of concentration, dullness of mind, sleep deprivation, etc.

Alochaka Pitta
It is locted in eyes. Optical perception required for vision is under the influence of alochaka pitta. It gives luster to the eyes, responsible for dilation and contraction of pupil associated with clarity and clear perception. It’s vitiation leads to difficulty in perception to eye and vision; conjunctivitis, blepharitis, styes, etc.

Bharajaka Pitta
It is situated in skin.It is responsible for luster and body complexion, heat, and skin pigmentation. It helps with the biochemical reactions within the skin and production of Vitamin D and melatonin. It’s imbalance leads skin problems such as skin discoloration, eczema, psoriasis, acne, skin cancer and other skin diseases.
