Heavy consumption of alcohol can also lead to this ailment, although people who consume alcohol in moderation do not face it.

Chronic hepatitis B,C and D also cause cirrhosis of the liver. Even non alcoholic fatty liver can lead to this ailment in the long run. Sometimes autoimmune disorders can cause the liver to malfunction and lead to liver cirrhosis. In this condition the immune system of the body can attack the liver and cause cirrhosis. Inherited disease like cystic fibrosis, Wilson disease, glycogen storage and others are also known causes.

Symptoms of Liver Cirrhosis

Many people who have liver cirrhosis don’t have any symptoms in the early stage of the disease. However, once the disease becomes serious they exhibit symptoms like lack of energy, loss of appetite, vomiting and nausea, sudden weight loss or gain, bruises, itchy skin, yellowing of the skin or the whites of the eyes. Other symptoms include edema due to fluid retention in the ankles, legs and abdomen, bloating of the abdomen and pain, blood vessels visible on the skin, the urine has brownish or orange tint, stools are of a light color blood in the stools and fever.

The pitta affects the fire element or agni and the enzyme activities which are responsible for digestion, absorption and metabolism. Cirrhosis is often a condition that arises due to liver problems like jaundice and hepatitis if they are neglected due to some reasons. This in turn causes liver cirrhosis which if not treated can be fatal. Shodhana, Shamana and Kayakalpa chikitsa are the usual methods of detoxifying not just the liver, but the whole body and suppressing the symptoms. Ayurveda aims at treating the body as a whole and not just the affected organ. Such holistic treatment is usually successful in curing the ailment, which is not possible in the allopathic system of medicine.
