Ayurvedic Aspect about Langhana chikitsa-
Langhana chikitsa-The word langhana is derived from the word laghu means light.The treatment which provide lightness in body and relieves the heaviness of body is called as langhana treatment.Langhana treatment is preferred in the peoples with less strength (alpa bala) and less morbidity (alpa dosha)
Defination of Langhana-
यत् किंच्चील्लाघवकरं देहे तल्लन्घनं स्मृताम्//
The therapy or medicines,which brings lightness and thinness to the body is called Langhana.
Increase in kapha dosha causes heaviness in body,it causes the blocking of channels.When this kapha is associated with Pitta dosha,then langhan treatment is advisiable.
Characteristic Features of Medicines/Treatments-
लघु उष्ण तीक्ष्ण विशदं रुक्षं सूक्षं खरं सरम् /
कठीनं च एव यत् द्रव्यं प्रायः तत् लंघनं स्मृतम् // च सू २२ / १२
The dravya used for langhana is light,hot,sharp,non-slimy,dry,minut,rough,hard and mobile in quality.
Types of Langhana Chikitsa-There are 10 types of langhana therepy advised in Charaka samhita.
चातुष्प्रकारा संशुद्धी: पिपासा मारुतातपौ /
पाचनान्युपवासश्च व्यायामश्चेती लंघनम्// च सू २२ /१८
Four types of Panchkarma therapies like vamana,virechana,niruha basti and nasya are included in this.
Along with Pipasa(controlling thirst),maruta (exposure to wind),Atapa (Exposure to sun),pachana (administration of foods and medicines which helps in digestion),upavaasa (fasting) and vyayama (physical exercise) also the another way of langhana chikitsa.
Langhana is given in patients with diabetes,sinusitis,obesity,amaj jwarand indigestion,where there is increase in guru (heavy)guna
It is also advisible in diseases like asthma,hyperlipidemia,coronary artery disease,constipation etc where there is pathology of obstruction of strotas.
Langhan treatment is also given in vata disorders affecting skin,affecting urinary tract.
It is also given in digestive disorders like alasaka,atisaar(diarrheoa),aruchi(anorexia),udarroga(ascitis),hrullas (nausea)etc.
The herbs which are used for langhana purpose are-
Guduchi –Tinospora cordifolia
Yava Churna-barley powder
Samyaka Yoga of Langhana chikitsa-
वात मूत्र पुरीषानां विसर्गे गात्र लाघवे /
हृदय उद्गार कंठ आस्य शुद्धौ तंद्रा क्लमे गते //
स्वेदे जाते रुचौ चैव क्षुत् पिपास सह उदये /
कृतं लंघनं आदेश्यं निव्यर्थे च अंतरात्मानी // च सू २२ /३४ ३५
It leads to proper excretion of flatus,urine and feces,lightness of body,feeling of purity in heart,purity in eructation,clarity in throat,feeling of fresh ,lack of dullness and drowsiness,appearance of sweat and appreciation of taste for food,hunger,thirst.
