General Information :
Habit – Small evergreen tree, Bark – Rough, brownish grey in colour, Leaves – Crowded towards the ends of the branches, 7.5 to 12.5 cm and 2.5 to 5 cm, narrowly oblong or oblong-lan-ceolate, entire, glabrous when mature, dotted beneath with minute resinous dots. Petiole 1 to 1.5 cm long. Male spikes – 1 cm long arranged racemosely on a common axillary stalk of 2.5 to 7.5 cm long. Female spikes – Axillary, erect, 1 to 3 cm long. Fruit – Drupe, 1 cm long, ellipsoid, scaly fish red in colour.

Chemical Composition :
The stem bark gave myricanol, aproanthocyanidin. The root bark yielded beta-sitosterol, taraxerol and myricadiol.
Research Corner :
The present study evaluated the anti inflammatory activity of ethyl acetate and aqueous extracts of bark of M. nagi using carrageenan and histamine induced rat paw edema. Adult Wistar albino rats were subjected to carrageenan and histamine induced albino rats were subjected to carrageenam and histamine induced rat paw edema tests. In carrageenan induced rat paw edema the effects of ethyl acetate and aqueous extract at 100 and 200 mg/kg. showed % inhibition of edema 27% and 22% respectively than the standard drug aspirin (28%).
