The procedure of dropping the medicated oil into the ears is known as karnapurana. This is also a part of the sharirabhyanga. Or this procedure is individually performed in clients suffering from different diseases of the ear and head for local action. In healthy persons as a part of sharirabhyanga oil is dropped into the ears and is known as karnabhyanga. Further, ear is categorized as a local route of drug administration and the drug administered is absorbed through the mucous membrane of the auditory canal; thus achieving adequate concentration of the administered drug at this site for its action. Thus medicines dropped into the ear produces immediate therapeutic effects.

PROCEDURE

The procedure of karnapurana includes abhyanga and svedana around ears followed by dropping of the medicated oil. The complete procedure is described below.

PREPARATION OF THE CLIENT

Karnapurana may be performed at any time of the day. Morning hour after the daily routines and head bath is most ideal time for karnapurana. If the client is suffering from any discharge from the ear, it should be cleaned with ear buds. Now the client is ready for karnapurana. The therapist should first chant the swastivachana hymn or prayer and then continue with the procedure.

DURATION

Oil applied to the ear is kept overnight undisturbed. Then the next day morning the cotton plug is removed and the ear canal is gently and properly cleaned by using the cotton buds
