Ayurvedic Treatment of Ulcerative Colitis In Nagpur

Ulcerative colitis:

  • It is a chronic disease in which large intestine is inflamed and ulcerated.

Introduction

  • It rarely affects small intestine.
  • Ulcerative colitis which is confined to the rectum is also seen in practice.

Symptoms

  • Manifests and flares up with sudden severe diarrhoea, high fever, abdominal pain of peritonitis.
  • Blood and mucus are found in the stool.
  • Sometimes patients have 20 bowel movements in a day.
  • Rectal spasm and urge to defecate will be present.

Complications

  • Bleeding produces anemia.
  • There may be arthritis, episcleritis, erythema, nodosum, pyoderma gangrenosum, ankylosing spondylitis, sacroiliitis associated with this disease.
  • Chronic active hepatitis, primary sclerosing cholangitis’s are also seen.
  • A serious complication is seen in about 10 % of people.

Diagnosis

  • ESR will be elevated.
  • Sigmoidoscopy or colonoscopy confirms the diagnosis.

Ayurvedic  Management

  • So vata pitta samana, vrana ropana should be the therapy.
  • Conventional medicines like asta curnam, pippalyasavam, hinguvacadi curnam should not be selected.
  • Aristas and asavas are not used.
  • Virecanam is fully contraindicated , but pica vasti can be done
  • Katu amla lavana varjitham is very important.
  • The Large intestine is a vatya sthana and vranam is because of pitta and raktha.
  • Intermittent use of Madura and kasaya rasa is highly useful.
  • Principles of pitta kapha grahani and rakta atisara are implemented.
  • Stambhanam has to be done in few cases.
  • Sodhanam,samanam, stambhanam are done based on avasta.
  • Raktham is one of jiva dhana. If needed stambanam has to be done at first phase itself phase itself.

Parijatak Ayurved Treat In The Following Way:

Kasayam

  • Nyagrodadi gana kasayam – 60 ml morning and night before food.
  • Priyanguvadi gana kasayam – 60 ml morning and night before food.
  • Laksa siddha ksira kasayam -60 ml night after food.
  • Usiradi kasayam – 60 ml morning and night before food.(sahasrayogam).
  • Pusyanuga sita kasayam – 60 ml morning and night before food.
  • Mustadi ksira kasayam is effective, but better t avoid milk products.
  • Laksa, musta, salmali ksira kasayam – 50 ml once daily is highly effective.
  • Guducyadi kasayam – 60 ml morning and night before food.
  • Mustadi gana kasayam – 60 ml morning and night before food.

Curnam

  • Priyangu curnam – 5 gms with honey morning and after food.
  • Pusyanuka curnam – 1 teaspoon with honey morning and after food.
  • Laksadi curnam 1 teaspoon with honey morning and after food.
  • Yasti madhu curnam – 1 teaspoon with honey morning and after food.
  • Lodhra curnam 5 gms with coconut water has been found effective in my practice (bid after food).

Paniyam

  • Paniyam with candana, draksa, vasa satavari and sariba is effective.
  • Prolonged use of guducyadi kasayam is useful.
  • Anuvasana vasti with murivenna (150 ml) or nalpamaradi karam and prichha vasti is highly useful.

Gulika

  • Astaksari gulika and kapada mattirai (Siddha ) are useful (2-0-2) after food
  • Sethubandhana gulika 1-0-1 with takram is also being given after food
  • Kaidaryadi vati -2-0-2 after food
  • Carngeriyadi gutika -2-0-2 after food
  • Vilvadi gutika -2-0-2 after food

 

Ghrtam

After attaining agnibala

  • Mahatiktaka ghrtam 5-10 ml along with ½ teaspoon of honey at bed time
  • Carngeriyadi ghrtam – 10 ml with warm water morning and night after food.
  • Sathadoutha ghrtam 5 – 10 along with ½ teaspoon of honey at bed time
  • Vrsa ghrtam. – 10 ml astaksari gulika (2 ) after food.

 

Rasa ousadas

  • Pravala pisti (1 gram) along with honey morning and night is also effective.
  • Sarja rasa bhasmam 500 mg. kanksi bhasmam 500 mg each with honeyh is effective.
  • Linga cendhuram – 50 – 100 mg with honey 2 times day after food should be advised.
  • Maha gandhaka rasa parpati or linga cendhuram (500mg bid) has the rasayana property and acts as immune suppressant like sulphasalazine.
  • Bola parpati- 500 mg along with honey morning and night.
  • Rasa parpati- 500 mg along with honey morning and night.

 

Do’s

  • If available, goat’s milk should be taken
  • Once this colitis is stopped anti dhatu paka cikitsa is to be done.
