Agni karma-Agni means Fire and karma means procedure.done by fire for treating the disease is called as Agnikarma.
The description of Agnikarma is given in Charaka samhita,Sushruta Samhita,Ashtang Sangraha,Astanga Hriday and Harita Samhita.

Material used for Agnikarma-

Pippali Loha Suchi Varti Tamra
Aja Shakrida Jambavashta Sneha Majja Rajat
Godanta Kshaudra Grita Yashti Kansya
Shara Madhuchista Taila Yashti
Shalaka Jaggery Vasa Hema

 

According to Acharya Sushruta-
For Twakdagdha-Pippali,Ajasarida,Godant,Shara,Shalaka should be used
For Mansadagdha-Jambhavashta shalaka and other Metals should be used
For Sira,Snayu,Sandhi and Asthidagdha-Madhu,Jaggery and sneha should be used

While according to Acharya Vagbhatta-
For twakdagdha-godanta and Suryakanta should be used
On the other hand ,in the treatment of Arsha,Bhagandara,granthi,nadivrana-Madhu,sneha,Jambavashta and Jaggery should be used

Classification of Agnikama-

A) Based on dravya used for agnikarma-
i.Snigdha Agnikarma-Done by using snigdha dravyas like tail,grhita,madhu
ii.Ruksha Agnikarma-Done by using Ruksha dravya like Pippali,shalaka,Ajasakrinda

B) Based on Disease
i.In Arsha,Kandara-Agnikarma should be done after surgical excision
ii.Disease like Sins,Fistula inAno-Agnikarma should be done after incision
iii.In Krimidanta-Agnikarma should be done after the cavity filling

C) Based on Akriti-
i.Valaya(circular shape)
ii.Bindu(dot shape)
iii.Vilekha (different shape)
iv.Pratisarana(no specific shape)
Acharya vagbhatta has mentioned another 3 shapes excepts these four
i.Ardhachandra(half moon shape)
ii.Ashtapada(eight limbs shaped)
iii.Swastika

D) Based on Dhatu-
i.Twakadagdha
ii.Sira and Snayudagdha
iii.Mamsadagdha
iv.Asthi-sandhidagdha

Symptoms And Signs of Agnikarma-
A)Twakadagdha- there is crackind sound,contraction of skin seen with bad smell production
B)Mamsadagdha-There is pigon like skin discolouration with inflammation and pain.The lesion get driedup and shriveled.
C)Sandhi And Asthidagdha-Dryness,readness and hardness seen with fixity of lesion

Done in all season excepts Grishma and Sharada ritu.

Effects of Agnikarma-
Increases the metabolish and blood circulation
Stimulates the nerve and relaxes muscles
Decreases joint stiffness and inflammation
Decreases the infection

Importance of Agnikarma-
The diseases which is treated with Agnikarma can never re-occure
The diseases which can not be treated with medicines,kshara and surgery can be treated by Agnikarma.
